Bye Bye Adenoids!
Health-wise, this past year has been really rough on Nico (mama and dada, too). The poor kid was sick every two to three weeks. It always started with a clear runny nose, then progressed into a bad cough, low-grade fever and sometimes ear infections.
At first, two of Nico's doctors (the poor kid has 4) said that it was just the normal cold that every baby gets approximately 9 times a year. We went along with this theory, until it started becoming so frequent that it didn't make sense. So, Nico was allergy tested and everything came back negative except for dairy (which we already knew) and dust-mites.
The allergist guessed that Nico had chronic sinusitis and wanted to do an X-ray the next time he was sick. Finally, someone with a different theory! So, like clockwork, Nico was sick two weeks later and they X-rayed his sinuses. Sure enough, the pictures showed a sinus infection.
On to the Ear, Nose and Throat doctor we went. The ENT ordered a CT of Nico's sinuses, which showed a massive sinus infection (while he was still on antibiotics) and adenoids that were two times larger than they should be. Also, the bone structure around his sinuses was preventing them from draining.
On December 15th, we said good-bye to the large adenoids. Nico had surgery to remove the adenoids, shave down the bone around the sinuses and flush out all the gunk. Nico did great and the doctor said it was even worse than he thought ... there was actually puss in his sinuses. Gross!
After a few days recovery and a little pain medication, Nico feels like a new kid. He's so happy and has actually tried a few new foods. Before the surgery, I don't think he could taste very well.
Here's to a happy, healthy New Year!

Our little patient was "drunk" in this picture. Before surgery, they gave him a liquid medicine to help him relax. (The nurses called it tequila.) He was so funny and started talking in a strange voice that we had never heard before!

Celebrating Nico
We had Nico's birthday party at the Austin Children's Museum. The museum is perfect for kids of all ages ... even the adults had fun!
Unfortunately, the birthday boy wasn't feeling his best on the day of his party, so he was a bit grumpy and as always, he was shy. He did have some fun though!

He's Two!
Hard to believe our baby is two! Everyone said it would go fast, but we had no idea that we'd have a two year old in the blink of an eye. The past two years have been the best ... Nico has brought us such joy (and laughter, love, fun, frustration, worry and sleepless nights). He is amazing and we are SO lucky to have him!

Nic took the day off from work, so we headed to Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch where we did the drive through safari. Nico loved getting so close to the animals ... until he met the ostriches!

Nico was excited about the animals that were coming up to the truck for food.

These guys look sweet and innocent ...

but they weren't! They definitely let it be known that they wanted our food!

The llamas were sweet and gentle though.

Here are those damn ostriches. The birds were so aggressive that they stuck their heads about two feet into the cab of the truck. Nico was screaming, "duck, duck, duck!" He thought we were being attacked by giant ducks. He was terrified!
You can see that my hand is blurry because I had to swat the crazy bird outta the window!

Once the poor child calmed down, we went to the petting zoo. Little did we know that the goats were just as bad as the ostriches!

I don't think Nico liked the baby goats.
Happy birthday sweet boy ... maybe next year we'll go see Shamu.

Weekend with Janny
Janny came to Austin to visit the weekend before Nico's birthday. We had a great time party-hopping, shopping and decorating for the holidays!

Decorating with Janny

We went to Jackson's 1st birthday party, which was a western theme.

The apple juice wasn't spiked with moonshine ... Nico's just tired from missing his nap.

The birthday boy! Happy first birthday Jackson Carter!

Hanging out with Josh & Jackson, Sarah & Sofia

Cutest outlaw ever!

While Mom and Dad are Away ...
Nico plays at Nonni and PopPop's. During football season, Nico spent a lot of time at Nonni and PopPop's house. Here are some pictures from his fun weekends at the "farm."
